"The Doc" tought me the importance of PDCA

About 10 years ago, we had a serious problem with parts supply for a Hilux special edition (Legend 40), I had to urgently travel to Durban for a recovery plan etc. I ended spending about 4 weeks at the plant and when I returned to Johannesburg it was on a Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, in that week there was an Executive strategy session held in Durban and all the Execs were returning on the same day as me. I boarded the flight and sat just behind business class, in the aisle seat. A few minutes later the “The Doc” boarded, and he was on the same row as me. Need less to say I was very nervous given the recent “chombo” at PPO about Legend 40. I expected him to give me a tongue lashing (“bishi bash”) about the trouble that my department caused in the plant. I was very surprised that he spoke to me very politely about the whole situation and the key message that he gave me was that “Whatever is it that caused the troubles in PPO, I must learn from it (PDCA), and I must make sure that it never happens again”. After that we had a pleasant conversation about local soccer (Sundowns/Pirate etc.) Ever since that experience, I always reflect on all challenges that I encounter during various projects and make sure that I improve on them for next projects etc.
Lala ngoxolo “The Doc”; your humble guidance will always be remembered.
