For some reason I had a very different relationship with Johan. From the first personal greeting at the Camry launch at sun city work discussions quickly went to topics of interest. Our love for wildlife was a big topic. We had a very mutual passion and respect for the bush and what it did for us. The next was our love for cycling. Meeting on any given weekend and riding out from Pretoria. We had an unspoken rule and out of mutual respect was never broken. We never discussed work during these rides. Johan was a tough competitor and we saw this in business. That never give up attitude was very powerful to tune his mind into a can do even when he was tired. He used to say to me “ pain is temporary giving up is permanent” he completed the Argus on 2 occasions and the 94.7 road race. A trip to rosemary hill was always a blast. After the rides we would have a coffee at the center opposite the dealer and just chat. While he was in Europe we had sometimes daily chats which did have some woke related matters more around his passion for new tech like connected car. Then these discussions changed at a key point, it was all about our family and the impact of his then first granddaughter Juno. We shared experiences and stories and how it had changed us as people and joined families. Sadly we spoke about riding again once it warmed up but that ride never happened. I guess another massive take out we both never wanted was to have any regrets in life. This is very powerful driving force to a person and inspires a growth mindset was always the discussion. Santie and his children and grandchildren and later son in-laws were always top of mind in any discussion. His passion in ensuring the family was successful was a life lesson to me. Johan you left us far to early. With so much more to offer. In all the time I knew you you only had one fear and that was retirement scared you. Thank you for being a colleague, mentor, leader and more so the most amazing friend I have ever known. Rest In Peace my friend for life JT
