I incurred a broken foot on a Saturday and had to wear a cast for 6 weeks. I came to work the following Monday. My work station was on the second floor, I battled going upstairs with my crutches.
Suddenly someone lifted me into his arms from behind. I was so surprised and embarrassed. Just kept on asking: "Who are you?" This person carried me to my desk. It was only then told by my senior, it was Dr. van Zyl. I was do suprised, shocked. Was later requested to remain home for the duration of time by HR.
The second incident. My grandson passed Gr 12. I wrote a letter to Dr van Zyl asking for a laptop since he was going to Varsity. Truly, within 2 weeks I was given the Laptop. I thanked Dr van Zyl once again.
Then, as usual, we went to Kayalami for the annual meeting. Dr van Zyl greeted in various languages. Then he said he didn't know there is another way of greeting because when he greeted some emoloyees, they replied: "Howzit." Dr. Van Zyl said to him it sounded like a greeting from someone who lives in Brakpan. The crowd of employees burst out laughing. It took us while to compose ourselves.
He always greeted with a smile, a truly magnificent person. He willl truly be missed by all at Toyota.
